Open Water Swimming in Lake Erie

The 2008 Monday & Wednesday evening swims at "The Pier" will start on June 4th, weather permitting. There will also be a number of swims held on Monday evenings. These training events are geared towards acclimating yourself to the open water and the things that are in it. There will be a 300 meter course laid out, to familiarize yourself with swimming continuously, without a wall every 25 yards. In previous years some members would do a warm-up by runnning along the waterfront, before the swim. Other members would go for a run along the path after the swim. Unfortunately there is a lot of contstruction in the area in 2008, and thus it really isn't possible to run or bike in the surrounding area. The construction is actually making it quite difficult just to get to the swim location itself, but it is still accessible.

These swim workouts are hosted by Tim Dieffenbach. They take place near 325 Furhmann Blvd, Buffalo NY 14203, formerly the home of the "Festival Grounds at The Pier" (but that building has since been taken down). You can use google maps, MSN maps and directions, Yahoo, MapQuest, etc, to obtain directions. Here is a map of the immediate area, which shows the exact location where we swim, including distance estimations.

BTC Swimming Rules:

  1. You must wear a bright-colored swim cap, to identify yourself in the water
  2. You must pair up with at least one other member to ensure everyone's safety
  3. BTC members must sign in prior to beginning the workout
  4. The BTC discourages the use of alcohol and members will not be permitted to participate in the workout if they have been drinking. Members are permitted to bring their own alchol for personal consumption following a workout, provided that they do not violate any venue rules or laws (no glass containers, no under age rinking, etc). Any members who bring and/or consume alcohol at or after a BTC event knowingly and personally assume the risk of so doing and expressly release from liability the BTC and all BTC officers and members.
  5. Friends are welcomed at the workouts. They must also sign in and follow the rules. Also, a $5 insurance fee is required from all non-members for each workout they attend.
  6. If friends will not abide by these rules, please do not bring them to the workouts.
  7. If you want to workout with with a non-compliant friend, do not sign in or join club members in their workouts. This is due to legal and insurance concerns.
