The 2020 Spring Thing

The Spring Thing has been cancelled for 2020 because we are unable to hold events or large gatherings.

The 11th Annual Buffalo Triathlon Club "Spring Thing" will be held on Saturday, May 16th, 2020The event will be based out of Shelter 4B at Beaver Island State Park, Grand Island, NY 14072.

This event is free to all BTC members but you must be pre-registered before midnight on Thursday May 14th, 2020.  The number of participants is limited to 60, and the slots will be filled first-come, first-served.  You must be a member of the BTC in order to participate in this event.  If you are not a member, but would like to participate in this event, you are welcome to become of a member of our club (only $25 for the year, for an adult individual).  The link to register for the Spring Thing is near the bottom of this web page.

We will be staggering the long course and intermediate course starting times so that our members will all finish around the same time.
  • 7am:  The "transition area" opens.  Shelter 4B, Beaver Island State Park, Grand Island, NY 14072.

  • 8am:  The “Long Course” - approximately 100 mile bike ride (5 loops of Grand Island), followed by a 10km (6.2Mi) run.

  • 9am:  The "Timed Century" - approximately 100 mile bike ride (5 loops of Grand Island).  No run.

  • Noon:  The "Intermediate Course" - approximately 40 mile bike ride (2 loops of Grand Island) followed by a 5km (3.1Mi) run.
  • 1:30pm (approx):  The "Short Course" - approximately 20 mile bike ride (1 loops of Grand Island) followed by a 5km (3.1Mi) run.

  • 3:30pm (approx.):  Small award ceremony at the park shelter.  We will either fire up the grills and provide hot dogs and hamburgers if the weather is good, or provide pizza if the weather is bad.  Participants and volunteers are encouraged to bring their own beverages and possibly some snacks and desserts to pass around.

Please note that this is NOT a closed course, so all traffic laws must be followed and caution is warranted the entire day.

NUTRITION:  Participants are encouraged to bring their own nutrition (food, drink, etc) to complete the event that they are registered for, however the BTC will also provide water, Infinit products, and other snacks.  We will have supplies available at the park shelter, as well as at a  tent on the bike course, and a table on the run course.  Participants are welcome to stage their own supplies at these locations as well.

According to the web site for Beaver Island Park, there will not be a charge to enter the park on May 18th.

We will probably hand out paper race number bibs (just like you are used to from running races and triathlons) for purposes of timing everyone, so please bring your own elastic race belts if you'd rather not use safety pins (which we will provide).
