Time & Location
All brick events are on Thursday nights. On-site sign-in and transition area set-up takes place between 6pm - 6:25pm, and the brick events start promptly at 6:30pm. It is crucial that we start on time to ensure that we finish before dusk. Unlike the Northtown bricks, these bricks will be very informal and have no official timer. Rather everyone will time themselves using the honor system and the fastest person each week might sometimes receive a small prize. You can only win once per season. Since there is no official time keeper there is no guarantee that there will be somebody available to keep an eye on everything in the transition area, but there usually is.
The Southtown Bricks take place at Chestnut Ridge Park, near the North entrance off Newton Road. We use shelter #21. If/when there is a problem with this location (such as another group booking the shelter, or the closure of the Newton Rd entrance, etc) we will use the Casino parking lot as our alternate location (see map below). If you arrive at the shelter #21 area and don't see anyone, please check the Casino parking lot. You can use Google Maps, MSN Maps(Bing), Yahoo Maps, Mapquest, etc. to obtain directions to the park.
This area is a prime location for the brick workouts because there is ample parking, decent roads to bike on, and very nice running routes within the park. Unlike the Northtown site, there are some pretty significant hills on Southtown biking and running routes.
Types of Bricks, Bike Routes, and Running Routes
The format of the Southtown bricks will be decided on a week-to-week basis, on-site at the start of the workout. The majority of the workouts tend to consist of some combination of two running routes (0.9 miles and 3.9 miles) and a 7.5 mile bike loop. Maps and elevation charts for those 3 routes can be found in this pdf file. Below is a map of the 8.7 mile bike route that we use for our alternate meeting site (at the Casino parking lot).
We are also going to try to something new in 2016. We have two time trials (timed bike events) on the schedule. One of them will consist of 2 or 3 laps of a 4.6 mile loop, while the other one will be a 1.4 mile hill climb. Maps for those two courses can be found below (click on them to enlarge).
Timing & Scoring
As described above, the Southtown Bricks do not utilize a formal time keeping and points-based scoring system, however we do occasionally hold timed events. When we are not using a club time keeper, each participant will time themselves (using their own stopwatch, Garmin, etc), and the Brickmaster will sometimes present a small prize to the winner. Each member can only win once, so as the season progresses everyone should have a shot at winning something.
